TECNO, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer with operations in over 70 global markets, has announced the debut of its new SPARK 20 smartphone in Sandton, South Africa at an official launch event.
Present at the event were TECNO’s esteemed partners, including representatives from mobile operators, retailers, media, influencers, and other tech enthusiasts. Taking center stage, the SPARK 20 was described by the evening’s host, radio personality, Elana Bredenkamp, as “the Everything phone.”
“This is a phone that is beautiful to look at, hardworking and ticks all the boxes. You can run your business from this phone and take action shots of your daughter’s hockey game. There’s nothing this phone can’t do.” she said
Unpacking the Features and Specs
Showcasing Innovative Tech
Alongside the SPARK 20, TECNO presented a range of other smartphones at the event. These included additional models from the SPARK 20 Series, such as the SPARK 20 Pro 5G and SPARK 20P (both soon to be available in South Africa), as well as the SPARK 20C and the SPARK GO 2024 (the latter two are already accessible in South Africa through select TECNO retail partners, including Edgars, TFG, Vodacom, and others).
Furthermore, other devices not currently offered in South Africa were also on exhibit, such as the CAMON 30, the PHANTOM V Flip, the PHANTOM V Fold, and the PHANTOM Ultimate concept phone (featuring an extendable, slidable screen for an enhanced visual experience). Despite their unavailability in the country, these devices were showcased to underscore TECNO’s commitment to innovation, ongoing research and development efforts, and technological expertise.
Additionally, the event highlighted TECNO’s AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) products; smart wearables and accessories designed to bring convenience, ease, and enjoyment to people’s lives. These products included Teggie the Dynamic 1 robotic dog, Sonic 1 Buds (boasting the world’s first in-ear, half in-ear free switching function), Watch Pro 2, True 1 earbuds, and the MEGABOOK T16 Pro 2024 Ultra laptop. Alongside its smartphone offerings, TECNO is intensifying its AIoT endeavors, aiming to provide more options for its South African audience and seamlessly integrate smart technology into people’s daily routines.
An evening of glitz, glamour, innovative tech, African culture and fashion feat
TECNO spared no effort in ensuring that the event was truly spectacular and unforgettable. This included showcasing a laser dance performance accompanied by pyrotechnics, an LED water curtain, and aerial dance artists. Additionally, there was a fashion show featuring designs by Tshepo Mohlala, stunning beaded artwork by the immensely creative Paul Mukanyi, and much more. These captivating elements, combined with the innovative technology on display, made for an unforgettable experience.
The event went beyond just showcasing technology; it also celebrated South African culture and fashion. TECNO demonstrated a keen awareness and respect for South African culture by seamlessly integrating it into the event proceedings, creating a harmonious fusion of technology and culture.

Channel Marketing Manager for TECNO SA, Queen Nkosi, says, “This is our very first launch in Africa. We have a good product presence in Nigeria and Tanzania. Our products, that include cellphones, laptops, wearables etc. have been well received in the South African market. We aim to grow beyond substantially in the east, west and north of Africa as our motto goes ‘stop at nothing.”
National Training Manager for TECNO SA, Thami Mokoena, says, “Our devices are user friendly. They run on Android and are made for everyone. Young and old. They are the most advanced and affordable in the market. Who would have thought that an entry level cellphone device can constitute an AI operation? One of my favourite features is the LinkBoom. I should say about our devices, in just four words; Best in class technology.”
